Contemporary visual art is one of the dominant major forms of expression that unites populations on a global scale through a universal form of communication that overcomes the barriers of language, culture and history. The artists are the architects of this revolution, they are the intellectual force that generates queries, thoughts, interpretations. This force proposes visions, albeit provocative, that are increasingly addressing the world as a whole. Young artists naturally are at the forefront of exploring new unfamiliar pathways, whilst facing difficult challenges, and attempting to create a more advanced point of view. The event aims to give voice to young artists from all over the world, to unite their thoughts in an exceptionally evocative location and, with time, become an artistic platform of powerful cultural and social content. A project that gives life to an International Youth Event, building bridges between cultures and populations.
The curator of Academiae Biennial 2018, Christian Jankowski, has set the curatorial theme and has selected professors, from the best European Academies of Fine Arts, who are established on the contemporary Art scene. Together they will then choose the exhibiting students. A Consulting Committee composed by renowned individuals from the local cultural institutions will be supporting and supervising the project.
The exhibition will take place in the fortress of Franzensfeste, South Tyrol, located in the heart of the Alps, symbolic for its change from a historical military facility to a meeting point of different ideas and populations.
A suggestive location that will act as a natural stage to showcast the innovative creativity of the new generations.
On the 4th and 5th of July (at 18h) some of the most famous professors of Academiae 2018 will be speaking at the Free University of Bolzano. The themes relate to contemporary art and address the development inside and outside of the rigid rules of the art markets and the perspectives linked to the new generation of artists today. Above all, the new concepts related to the teaching of Art and the different approaches with which the Professors involve their students will be explored. Art in academic practice has a limit to overcome in order to experiment a new perspective of teaching Art and artistic research. The moderator of these talks will be the Dean of the Faculty of Design and Arts of Unibz, Prof. Stephan Schmidt-Wulffen, an art historian, curator and former Dean at the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Vienna. He was also the Dean at the New Design University in St. Pölten.
In Bolzano, on July 13th (19h) at the public gardens of Capuccini, there will be an opening of a Land-Art exhibition of works made by young artists from various Italian Fine Arts Academies. The small but enchanting public park, nestled in the heart of the old city welcomes and places the «land art» works rigorously realized with natural materials. An artistic journey amongst the green context of the park will naturally blend in with the time and of the atmospheric agents. Art and nature are integrated among them, in an empathetic dialogue without boundaries between human thought and the timeless force of nature, in search of a coexistence between progress and the ecosystem. It will be a tribute to the citizens and tourists of Bolzano who will visit this green living room.
Visual art is one of the means by which artists are able to express their ability to create new visions of our future and to interpret and anticipate the trends of our society in every field. This capacity is recognized and applied also in the processes of innovation and development. Based on this concept our initiative is to create a contemporary art installation at the NOI-Technopark in Bolzano that symbolizes this strategic closeness between art and research. A young artist will be asked to assemble and create a site-specific installation at the entrance of the Technopark, assisted by other young local artisans only using eco sustainable or recycled materials. The intuition and the artistic path reassemble common objects and shapes give an evolutionary interpretation and indicate new solutions.
Africanism – Beyond the Stereotypes is an exhibition of African art at the Bolzano City Gallery opening on May 3rd and will run until May 30th, 2018.This exhibition will show contemporary art works made by emerging artists living in Africa and/or directly related to the African diaspora. With different languages and expressive techniques, the artists offer us an overview of the new African artistic and cultural movements by suggesting new interpretations that help us to understand and interpret the great social, economic and cultural development that the African continent is experiencing. The exhibition will also include precious ancient tribal masks in dialogue with contemporary artworks as well as «pop-art« works made by street artists. An exhibition that helps us to create an overview that is not stereotypical, but open to this evolution of the African continent.
